Having an arts-enhanced program has been a mainstay of the school since its inception 25 years ago. All students from SK to Grade 8 have weekly visual arts classes with an art specialist, and also have opportunities with Core and specialist staff to learn about the arts and create personal, meaningful pieces that connect to their learning and community.
As part of a visiting artist program, Grade 6 students learned about traditional Indigenous paintings and created their own images in the style they had been learning, using animals that are native to our land in Canada.
In the middle school, all students further their art education by taking part in a highly spirited and collaborative annual musical. Participation is built into the schedule in Grades 6 and 7 through a weekly musical theatre class. Students in Grade 8 learn about stage management and tech and take responsibility for those aspects of the performance. The annual musical preparation culminates with Theatre Week, 5 days at the end of May focused solely on getting the play stage ready and performing it to a live audience of students, family and community members.
