Admission Process

Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School welcomes all inquiries. We encourage prospective families to attend one of our Parlour Meetings or call us at 416-928-3537 to set up a personalized school tour.

Since space is limited, we recommend that prospective parents apply for your child as much in advance as possible.

A detailed overview of the Admissions Process follows:

1. Application Documents and Deposit

We require prospective parents to provide the following documents, which should be submitted to the school office, along with a non-refundable deposit of $500.00:
Application for admission
Past school records (if applicable)
Copies of past assessments (if applicable)

2. Family Meeting and Child Observation

Upon receiving an application for admission, we will contact prospective families to schedule a meeting with the parent(s) or guardian(s) and one of our education specialists. We will also conduct an informal observation of the prospective student(s).

3. Letter of Acceptance

One of the goals of the admission process is to ensure that Paul Penna DJDS is the right match for a prospective child’s needs. Throughout the process, we communicate closely with parents and students, taking into account the best interests of the child, as well as the school’s philosophy and resources. Once we have determined whether a child has been accepted for the upcoming school year, we will notify the family in writing.

For students entering Senior Kindergarten, the admission process is generally completed by the end of January. In Grades 1-6, where spaces are available, new applications are generally processed between January and April.

Should we reach capacity in a particular class, we will continue to interview and assess additional applicants and create a waiting list. In order to ensure placement on the waiting list, all potential applicants must submit an application form and deposit fee. We will notify applicants as soon as possible with respect to the final status of their application.

4. Deposit

Upon acceptance, an applicant’s deposit will be applied toward the tuition fee for the year of entry. Once a letter of admission has been sent, no refund will be issued.

Please note that it is the school’s policy to prioritize applicants who are either siblings of current students, or students of the Miles Nadal Jcc Thomas & Marjorie Schwartz Preschool School.
