Mission accomplished! We made it through our CAIS accreditation visit. After a three-year process, culminating in a four-day evaluation committee visit to our school, Penna Paul Downtown Jewish Day School is proud to be an esteemed CAIS accredited school.
I know a rabbi in Los Angeles who decided to speak only Hebrew to his children so that they would learn the language naturally and painlessly. Their mother and everyone else in their lives spoke English. I once asked the four-year-old daughter what language her father spoke to her, and she answered, “Hebrew.” Then I asked her what language her mother spoke, and she responded, “Normal.”
According to a rabbinic legend, at the end of our lives, we will be asked some challenging questions about the way we lived and about the choices we made. The rabbis warn us that the toughest question we will have to answer is: “Did we enjoy all of the permitted pleasures?”
September 2012 marked an exciting time for Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School, with the implementation of the JUMP Math pilot project for all students, from Grades One to Eight. In a recent interview with John Mighton, the renowned mathematician, playwright, author and founder of JUMP Math, he explained his decision to serve as a mentor to Paul Penna DJDS.
At Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School, integrated units replace what is traditionally science or social studies class. By starting with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s curriculum, and then fi nding a “Big Idea” — that is a meaningful, enduring understanding about humans and our world — we integrate science, social studies, Language Arts, Judaics, the arts, as well as other disciplines, whichever best fi t the “Big Idea”.
