Announcement of 2010 Tribute Gala Honouree Dr. Larry Librach
We are excited to announce that our 2010 Tribute Gala Honouree is Dr. S. Lawrence Librach, Director of The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr Librach’s credentials are vast and impressive, and his contributions to our city and abroad are poignant. He is also the proud grandfather of Ella in Grade 2 and Jesse in SK.
A project of particular significance to Dr. Librach and his family is Camp Erin, which aims to support children experiencing grief over the death of a loved one. The children's camp is sponsored by the Moyer Foundation in the USA and it is the first in Canada. The first camp this September hosted over 50 children from around the GTA and was a great success. This unique program emphasizes quality of life and holistic care for patients and families.
Dr. Librach is highly involved in promoting palliative care internationally. He has consulted with colleagues in Brazil, Japan and Russia, and, with the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program, led a Canadian delegation of palliative care professionals to China in November 2009.Dr. Librach’s academic interests are wide-ranging, but the development and implementation of education programs is an area of special interest. He has delivered over 500 lectures and workshops. Having published extensively, of particular note, Dr. Librach is the author of the Pain Manual (over 150,000 copies distributed) and co-edited a textbook, Palliative Care: Core Skills and Clinical Competencies, which is going into its second edition.
On a more personal note, as well as being a dedicated and doting grandfather, Dr. Librach is an avid reader and outdoorsman who also loves to bake, cook and travel.
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to honour Dr. Librach and look forward to his involvement with our school community. The Tribute Gala will be held on June 7, 2010.
